‘Life will find a way’ Micheal Crichton

2360- 71 years after the Great Rupture.
Gaia.
Terra.
Earth.
Archaic words that no longer hold meaning for those born and raised on New Brisbane. The great capital ship of Australia.
...
I take the silence as one of disbelief, for few would expect such a carefree nation to brave the cold depths of space.
Curiously, Australia had been spared the fierce nuclear war that had reduced Eurasia to so much glass, solely on the fact that the island continent was far out of harms reach.
In the years that followed humanity managed to recover from the Great War, but much of the mineral resources had been burned to fuel a war of epic proportion, leaving the planet a dried out husk. The need of resource forced deeper excavation into the earth’s crust that would ultimately lead to Rupture.
The urgency of their situation forced Australia to speed up their space program. Technically It was just continuing the work that been left at Baikonur, Russia, seeing as no-one else was left to continue the research. Fuelled by hopes of a better future, the Australian government made use of the meagre raw materials, going as far as sinking their entire navy to use the steel and iron to produce the massive rusting space carriers, New Brisbane and her twin sister New Queensland.
The desperate plan of survival was not unfounded, careless mining with thermonuclear technology had caused the Pacific to rush into the massive excavations deep inside the mantel layer and ultimately into the very core of the world
Those escaping on the ships were fortunate to be alive as the earth literally ruptured, blown apart as fire and water met.
....
The proud boys from the planet gone under still cling to life in the vast depths of space, but humans are humans, nonetheless and constant squabbles over mineral resources break out between the two now rival factions, occupying the rusting ships New Brisbane and New Queensland.

Just another day....

Despite the fact that I am saddened that no other survivors from other countries made it (like say America [but that's just the American in me talking]), this is a really cool setting, and it's nice to see Australia — a country you don't see to often in fiction — get its own room to shine.
